Canada is taking a crucial step in animal protection with a historic legislation that prohibits animal experimentation and the trade of animals for cosmetics, showcasing the country's commitment to respecting the rights and dignity of animals! We only have one thing to say: FINALLY!
Each year, nearly 500,000 animals are subjected to cosmetic tests, enduring substances being forced down their throats, applied to their skin, or directly into their eyes, causing them suffering without any relief. We firmly believe that animal experimentation is outdated, ineffective, and inhumane.
There has never been any justification for animal experimentation, but even less so when there are cruelty-free methods available that are faster, more reliable, and less costly.
This new legislation now prohibits animal experimentation, the trade of cosmetics tested on animals, as well as any non-compliant or misleading labeling related to animal experimentation in the cosmetic industry. Officially, the law prohibits:
- the sale of a cosmetic unless its safety can be established without relying on data derived from a test conducted on an animal that could cause pain, suffering or injury, whether physical or mental, to the animal, subject to certain exceptions;
- the conduct of a test on an animal that could cause pain, suffering or injury, whether physical or mental, to the animal if the purpose of the test is to meet a legislative requirement that relates to cosmetics; and
- deceptive or misleading claims, on the label of or in an advertisement for a cosmetic, with respect to testing on animals.
This progress won’t change everything overnight, but it is a significant step in the right direction. However, the fight for animals does not end here! Continue to demand 100% vegan and cruelty-free products!
